Interesting and unusual story line, but rather thin. I liked the idea of an impoverished earl following his heart instead of going after a fat purse. Colin is likeable, but i find him too unimaginative when it comes to the state of his finances. The story dragged and i got bored and irritated with Colin's inability to find a single option for a possible solution to his predicament, yet he keeps telling himself that everything will work out. In fact, his sister Rose is much more capable. And if not for Ava's idea, he would not even have ventured with the writing. It didn't look like he would have managed on his own. For a while it seemed the only way he could earn some coins was by making a fool of himself before his stupid acquaintances. Ava is a strong and witty woman who also happens to be caring. It is thus understandable that Colin should fall for her, but i never felt a real romance or a strong attraction. Sure the author wrote about it, but it didn't reflect as it should. The only time i felt the vibes of attraction was during the road encounter of Rose and Nick, and that was but a few paragraphs. I might buy their story.I also got confused at the start with all the names -- Colin, Conway, Clayton, Leyton... i had to go back and check again who's who. Too many characters really, but with a wide array of names available the author picked four with a C that rhymed too.
I appreciate the author's warning about the explicit contents. And yes, they were there. I didn't like them; if they were entirely left out they won't be missed but of course they counted for more words.
All in all, the book is okay but far from memorable.

Though many earls may have found themselves in dunn territory, making the usual plans to marry the the most suitable heiress, Colin, despite his deep affection for his two remaining dependents, sisters Rose and Lettie, has not yet been able to bring himself to do the deed. He is a most unusual gentleman who has always looked out for those less fortunate. He returned home after a season in the army, when his father died leaving the family near the doors of debtors prison. Following an unsuccessful short season in London, he is on his way home just before Christmas, with his valet, also a former soldier who was badly burned, and whose disfigurement drastically limited his possibility of employment. They are thrown off a mailcoach when Stempleton's scarred appearance offends other passengers. Unfortunately, the closest place they could find shelter from the bitter cold weather was a nearby estate of Colin's former schoolmate, Clayton, a detestable viscount who delights in humiliating others. It was there that Colin rescues two females in distress, both in service at the estate, an act that leads to the four being ousted in the very early hours of the morning. Not only was our Lord destitute, he was now bringing home three more mouths to feed. Through the foresight of his companions and a bit of good fortune, the rather rumpled group arrive to Colin's estate to find it rented to a wealthy American family. Directed to the dower house, he found his two young sisters unchaperoned, without servants and fending for themselves courageously. On the travels homeward, attractions had tentatively begun to form between valet and cook's assistant, Maude, and between the earl and governess, Ava, complicating Colin's plans to save his family through matrimony. I found this to be a delightfully unlikely but humorous and very entertaining regency romance in which happily ever afters can only be gifts from heaven to come true. This family. so full of love, both fraternal and romantic, experiences one escapade after another. Although fully capable of being a stand alone, the novel leaves the reader anticipating outcomes for Colin's brothers and sisters in future volumes. It cannot be described as a sweet romance as bedroom scenes are described, but fans of regency romance will find themselves pulling for this unusual, endearing and oddly formed family.
This truly was a beautiful story. Right from the start it was obvious these two belong together. The book had everything and even the sex scenes were beautiful with so much passion, respect and love. I don't usually like a lot of sex in books but this one had just enough and was so well written it was truly a worthwhile read.
The hero in this book was just what every woman looks for in a guy and the heroine was very clever and witty. I highly recommend.
What choice does a man have when faced with so much, with so little except to go where you're most needed-home! On the way there this noble but poor earl is tossed from the mailcoach while defending his scarred valet, forced to swallow his pride and accept money from a dastardly viscount as well as rescue a governess from said viscount! After also rescuing a book's assistant the group proceed homeward where they find the earl's two sisters residing the power house making it apparent how financially crippled they were but Christmas showed them they had the most important thing - love. Of course we wouldn't have a story if our hero couldn't almost mess everything up! It was enjoyable reading of how love guides all home.
Colin(H) is an impoverished Earl who had to rent the country manor in order to meet financial responsibilities. He's trying to meet and marry a woman with a large dowry. Instead of solving issues, he manages to add three more mouths to his list of responsibilities on his way back to the country from London. Ava(h) is governess at a fellow peers house. They meet when Colin gains housing at this peers house. Things are much less than perfect for her and an assistant cook. Colin leaves with both governess and cook and his man to continue his journey back to his house. This is the conflict between marrying for love or for money. In addition, it is about family love and loyalty, as well as respect for all other regardless of physical appearance, ethnicity, and economic status in life. Excellent author, great ability to hold reader's attention, super pacing.
