The Banjo Essays is an inspirational work that takes the personal experiences of an amateur bluegrass musician and applies the lessons learned in banjo playing to life in general.

Written in a light tone, each chapter presents a topic with observations, anecdotes, and discussions of philosophers and writers. The Banjo Essays brings together the interrelationships that exist among faith, tackling a new musical instrument, and how we live our everyday lives. Yet one does not need to be a bluegrass enthusiast or even religious to appreciate the extended metaphors presented, and its shorter length and conversational tone have drawn a wide-range of readers.

As a five string banjo player I enjoyed the application of banjo lessons to life. This book has a warm inviting way of challenging our lives to be their best. A good book which also led me to order "Gregorius, the Good Sinner."

The Banjo Essays edition by Richard Graf Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

I thought this book was to be instructional, one of the problems of only being able to preview the first several pages. This type of book is not what would normally read.
not enough pages
I enjoyed Richard's book for a very simple yet moving reason - because it reminded me that the only person that puts obstacles in my way of trying something new is me. Even at my age (yes, I'm past age 40 something! The book was positively delightful, an easy read that provided a lot of food for thought.
Great book for a banjo player on a spiritual journey. Very interesting format from a writers view point.
Although well written, this book is more about philosophy than the banjo
I enjoyed the thoughtful essays that paired life experiences with learning to play an instrument, in this case the banjo. You do not need to be a musician to recognize the feelings of trepidation, fear, and insecurity, that all of us feel when we try to move out of our comfort zone and into a new situation. The author understands that it is easier to stay safe instead of push ourselves into the unknown. The essays remind us that, whether you are playing an instrument or living your life, getting better at something requires a little discomfort and hard work, but the rewards are gratifying.
The Banjo Essays is not so much about banjo playing, but about the simple virtues and personal traits the writer learned to be essential to fulfill his life-long dream. Rick provides well-written anecdotes and Bible verse applications that illustrate realizations he made during his banjoing journey. He makes it evident that sometimes the lessons learned on the path to our accomplishments are even more valuable than the accomplishments themselves. Banjo and bluegrass may not be your style, but the wisdom Rick Graf shares from his experience is applicable to any of your life's ventures. Pick it up today - it's a quick and easy read, packed with valuable insight for you.
