I just finished reading this book. I won the book in a drawing and the Kindle version was a freebie last week (now it's back to full price). I really wanted to love this book and give the author some free publicity. The author is so sweet and she had a fun little facebook chat last night about the book. But I had a lot of problems with the book that made it impossible for me to rank it as highly as I wanted to.

What I liked: The story is cute. I started out really liking the book and not wanting to put it down because the premise held some mystery. I connected with the heartache of the main character over losing her mother and having no where to go next. It's contemporary and addresses relevant issues for today.

What I didn't like: The story has too many coincidences to be believable. At the beginning, main character, Claire has just lost her mother and she's trying to figure out what to do with her life. She's spent the last year or two wrapped up in caregiving when others her age might have been in college. She discovers an old love letter in the glove box of her mom's Volkswagen and begins to obsess about it. For some reason, she just has to know who it came from.

Fast forward do the one-year anniversary of her mom's death and Claire loses her job because she's too dreamy, apparently because of the letter. Don't worry, I'm not giving away any spoilers. This is all in the first couple of chapters.

Claire's tired of living with her sister and her alcoholic brother-in-law, so she decides to leave L.A. and venture north to Capitola, California in search of the writer of this love letter from 35 years ago. On the way, she has one coincidental encounter after another. Now, she chalks it all up to God's providence, but few readers are going to find it believable. So many people from her past, just happen to have connections with people in the very same place she's headed.

I thought the dialogue was stiff in places and just too mundane to really engage me. I didn't feel like I connected with any of the characters, except maybe the grandmother, Geraldine. She was spunky for her age. And I really liked Claire at first, until she made a string of immature decisions. Seemed like she'd bring that letter out in some of the most awkward situations to try to get answers. The way the gospel is presented in the book isn't as compelling as it ought to be. Claire, abruptly realized her need to "ask Jesus into her heart", and it was a little cliche in how it happened.

I also had a difficult time with how trusting Claire was. Along the way, she encountered several very kind people, but she seemed to develop instant attachments with strangers. She accepted the offer to stay in an RV with a couple she accidentally rear-ended with her VW. And then she went home with a tow truck man when her car couldn't be fixed late at night. The fact that he had a wife, didn't lessen my concern over her trust. Claire bonded too quickly with a single male neighbor and there was just too much flirty innuendo for my taste. He was a nice Christian guy, but I didn't need some of Claire's comments that bordered on lust. And then, she referred to one young woman as a "good friend" when she'd only met her once for a few hours at a campground.

Wow! It's so tough being so negative, but like I said, I really wanted to love this author's debut novel. It's so rare that I have this many objections to a book. Sometimes being objective is just painful.

Delivered With Love Sherry Kyle 9781426708664 Books Reviews

2 1/2 stars. I really wanted to like this book more than I did. The author had some fun ideas along the lines of those you'd find in a Hallmark Channel movie, including many convenient coincidences. But it got to the point where there were WAY too many. Plus lots of cliches, and the hero was more a woman's fantasy of the perfect guy. I like a good sappy movie once in awhile, but unfortunately Delivered With Love just wasn't for me. I ended up skimming most of the end.
Such a sweet and moving story of a young woman in the turbulent sea of life whose search for the mystery letter writer leads her down God's path for her. From the beginning of Delivered with Love, you could see that the author was wanting to show how God can lead you down the path if you are just willing to follow. By the time Claire was brushing Geraldine's hair in the hospital, I had tears in my eyes and prayers on my lips. I truly got taken away by the story and had been pulled into Claire's struggles. Seeing how God was there with every instance after she left Haley's house, led to a soul searching moment for me as I to did not know my biological father while growing up. Thank you for such an endearing story that I cannot wait to share with my own daughter.
I loved the book!! It was a pleasant story, which is the kind I like. I figured there would be a happy ending, but again, that's the kind of books I like. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. There was romance, drama, conflict, and the wonderful Christian theme throughout. I enjoy reading books that are completely clean and have that theme! It is a book I could let my daughter read...which is also a compliment. Someone was critical of this book for it being unrealistic like you wouldn't run into that many people saying those things about God. I am here to tell you that it IS possible if you are surrounded by Godly people. But even if it were unrealistic, it's fiction! Great job, Sherry Kyle!
It's a gorgeous spring day here in the Pacific Northwest--the kind that makes me long for one of two things a road trip or an afternoon sitting in the sun with a good novel. This book fulfills both of those dreams. Author Sherry Kyle has served up a delightful story with her debut novel, Delivered With Love. When you pick up this fun book, you will follow 23-year-old Claire James on a California road trip that will change her life forever. Already longing for a fresh start, when Claire finds an old love letter in the glove compartment of her late mother's 1972 Volkswagen, the idea of finding the mystery writer is simply too tantalizing to resist.

While Delivered With Love is Sherry Kyle's first novel, her tween-age non-fiction title, The Christian Girl's Guide to Style is one of my daughter's favorite books and the librarian at our Christian school recently mentioned that it has been such a highly requested book that she's ordering additional copies. With such amazing writing talent and versatility, I look forward to seeing more of Sherry Kyle's books on our shelves in years to come.
The cover of Sherry Kyle's Delivered with Love is terrific. I only wish what was in-between the covers was as appealing. The premise is good, but my primary issue with this debut novel is that the secondary characters overshadow the heroine. Claire is sweet and unassuming, but naive to the point of being careless and putting herself in potential danger. It seems that any time she needs something, someone is there and - voila! - provides just what she needs. I certainly understand and appreciate how the Lord can provide time and again, but this is overkill. The hero is too perfect, the dialogue stilted at times. Above all, it's the unrealistic coincidences that killed the joy of reading this novel. It's surprising to the point of shocking how a major publisher could release this debut novel - which shows appeal and promise on the part of the author - without an overhaul. Delivered with a little more time and care, it could shine. I hope Ms. Kyle has another opportunity to win me over with her next fiction offering.
