The Sheriff of Yrnameer A Novel Michael Rubens Books
I had high hopes for this book, as a huge fan of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, and other authors that have successfully combined humor and excellent writing. I've tried novels that have tried to inject humor into genre fiction in the past, and have usually been disappointed. It just doesn't work all that often, unfortunately. My hopes were completely vindicated, in this case, which was a pleasant surprise. The plotting, character development, and twists and turns were all fantastic. The bits of humor were appropriately spaced and never over the top. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of humorous science fiction, or just sci fi in general. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Check it out, please. Any time a new novelist generates something of this quality, I'm shocked. As readers, we need to encourage this kind of talent. So please, please, try out this book.
You won't regret it.

The Sheriff of Yrnameer A Novel Michael Rubens Books Reviews
This is Michael Rubens' first novel, and it's reminiscent of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and I'm looking forward to more from Rubens. I still can't decide who my favorite character is, but I think I've got it narrowed down to Peter the 'Puter or Kenneth, a bounty hunter with an odd sense of humor and eggs to lay. Definitely give this one a try if you enjoy humorous fiction.
If you are a Douglas Adams fan and a Star Wars fan, you'll love this. It is almost like Douglas Adams wrote a book about Han Solo...if Han Solo wasn't nearly as cool. I loved it.
If Douglas Adams wrote a Western - this might have been it.
Fun, quirky, lovable scamp is running for his life and ends up at the end of the galaxy.
Does he get away? Does he win the gal o' his dreams? Does he become a host for aliens egg deposits?
You have to buy the book to find out.
I did, and loved it.
Story was interesting but some chapters were hard to follow as they seemed to be a slightly different story line and didn't flow as easily as the others did. The chapters that actually included Cole and Kenneth were better, than when the two main characters were missing. However, if it wasn't for my local NPR station interviewing the author, I never would have heard about the story, and this prompted me to purchase the book.
If you are a fan of Douglas Adams and all the tomfoolery he injected into his stories, this one if for you. It has that same silliness that usually only comes from English people and their particular brand of humor. There are super-strong insect aliens, crazy spaceships, zombies, murderous other aliens, and, at the heart of it all, a loser main character who really just doesn't want to become another brain incubating insect eggs. If you pay attention you will find all kinds of not so subtle messages (the whole planet Yrnameer thing for example). if you don't pay attention, it doesn't matter, it's a fun story. And as somebody who had had eggs injected into my brain, i can tell you, i'm glad Michael Rubens doesn't glorify it like so much of the media does today. There are no baked goods in this one though. perhaps the next book (i hope there is another one!) will include a recipe for shortbread.
EDIT
i finally have some time to update my review!
the book was a very nice and fun read, i really went through it extremely fast. (i am a slow reader, with little time, and english is not my first language). its comically breath taking, and it's one event after the other. it does remind me of Douglas Adams's "hitchhiker guide to the galaxy", so if your a fan of that style, go for this book!!
If you were a fan of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you owe it to yourself to read this book! I'd liken it to HGTTG for this generation, everything is witty and the jokes hit home when in the context of today's technology!
The story follows our outlaw smuggler hero through space with his ragtag crew, running from the corporately sponsored space pirate. The sights along the way kept me laughing until they reached the non-sponsored planet Yrnameer. The last bastion from constant advertising in the galaxy.
Everything comes together as the Spaghetti Western style showdown comes to a hilarious climax.
Wonderful Read!
